Week 4: Sunday Evening Prayer II

Psalmody

Psalm 110 (1-5, 7)

Ant. We are servants here below of God and of the Church. (1830 letter to Fr. Jeancard)

The LORD’s revelation to my lord:
“Sit at my right hand,
until I make your foes your footstool.”

The LORD will send from Zion
your sceptre of power:
rule in the midst of your foes.

With you is princely rule
on the day of your power.
In holy splendour, from the womb before the dawn,
I have begotten you.

The LORD has sworn an oath he will not change:
“You are a priest forever,
according to the order of Melchizedek.”

The Lord at your right hand
shatters rulers on the day of God’s wrath.
He shall drink from the stream by the wayside,
and therefore he shall lift up his head.

Glory to the Father…

Ant. We are servants here below of God and of the Church.

Psalm 112

Ant. May God and our Lord Jesus Christ be praised, blessed and adored with more fervour. (1846 diary entry)

Blessed are those who fear the LORD,
who take great delight in God’s commands.
Their descendants shall be powerful on earth;
the generation of the upright will be blest.

Riches and wealth are in their houses;
their righteousness stands firm forever.
A light rises in the darkness for the upright;
they are generous, loving and righteous.

It goes well for those who deal generously and lend,
who conduct their affairs with justice.
They will never be moved;
forever shall the righteous be remembered.

They have no fear of evil news;
with a firm heart, they trust in the LORD.
With steadfast hearts they will not fear;
they will see the downfall of their foes.

Openhanded, they give to the poor;
their righteousness stands firm forever.
Their might shall be exalted in glory.

The wicked see and are angry,
grind their teeth and fade away;
the desire of the wicked leads to doom.

Glory to the Father…

Ant. May God and our Lord Jesus Christ be praised, blessed and adored with more fervour.

Canticle (Rev 19: 1-7)

Ant. How many things there are to ask from God…you have to profit from and cooperate with God’s mercy. (1826 Roman Diary)

Salvation, glory and power belong to you,
your judgements are honest and true.

All of us, your servants, sing praise to you,
we worship you reverently, both great and small.

You, our almighty God, are Creator of heaven and earth.
Let us rejoice and exult, and give you glory.

The wedding feast of the Lamb has begun,
And the bride has made herself ready.

Glory to the Father…

Ant. How many things there are to ask from God…you have to profit from and cooperate with God’s mercy.

Reading

Eugene de Mazenod’s life journey helps us to identify some new faces of the poor today. His dysfunctional family can evoke the dysfunctionalities of today’s families. His period of migration reminds us of the drama of the migrants in these present times and the related issues of justice and peace. His struggles to seek a meaning of life and recognition as a young adult recall the spiritual poverty of our contemporary world.

(Acts of the 36th General chapter, p. 21)

Canticle of Mary

Ant. Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.

My heart is radiant, overflowing with joy,
for you have loved my lowliness.
You have shown me great favour;
all people will call me blest.

Your mercy extends throughout the ages
toward those who revere your holy name.
You have revealed your strength,
scattering the proud of heart.

You dethrone the powerful
and lift up the lowly.
The famished are filled;
the rich sent empty away.

Your people Israel you have remembered,
true to your loving kindness,
just as you have promised long ago
to Sarah and Abraham.

Glory to the Father…

Ant. Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.

Intercessions

For the church. That it may be a sign of unity and an instrument of peace in a divided world. We pray.

For the nations that are torn apart by acts of violence and war. We pray.

Open the hearts of those with abundance to respond to the cries of the poor, We pray.

For ourselves that the Holy Spirit might stir us to become better examples of Christ to the world. We pray

Lord’s Prayer

Concluding Prayer

O God, patient and forbearing, you alone know fully the goodness of what you have made. Strengthen our spirit when we are slow and temper our zeal when we are rash, that in your own good time you may produce in us a rich harvest from the seed you have sown and tended. We make our prayer through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God for ever and ever. Amen.
