Week 4: Sunday Evening Prayer I

Psalmody

Psalm 122

Ant. The little good I have done, I have done because God in his goodness was pushing me by the shoulders. (1818 retreat notes)

I rejoiced when they said to me,
“Let us go to the house of the LORD.”
And now our feet are standing
within your gates, O Jerusalem.

Jerusalem is built as a city
bonded as one together.
It is there that the tribes go up,
the tribes of the LORD,
as is decreed for Israel
to give thanks to the name of the LORD.

There were set the thrones for judgment,
the thrones of the house of David.
For the peace of Jerusalem pray,
“May they prosper, those who love you.”
May peace abide in your walls,
and security be in your towers.

For the sake of my family and friends,
let me say, “Peace upon you.”
For the sake of the house of the LORD, our God,
I will seek good things for you.

Glory to the Father…

Ant. The little good I have done, I have done because God in his goodness was pushing me by the shoulders.

Psalm 130

Ant. To persevere in so meritorious an apostolate, one must hold fast to the spirit of one’s vocation with fidelity and fervour. (1849 letter to Fr. Ricard)

Out of the depths I cry to you, O LORD;
Lord, hear my voice!
O let your ears be attentive
to the sound of my pleadings.

If you, O LORD, should mark iniquities,
Lord, who could stand?
But with you is found forgiveness,
that you may be revered.

I wait for the LORD, my soul waits.
I hope in God’s word.
My soul is waiting for the Lord,
more than sentinels for daybreak.

More than sentinels for daybreak,
let Israel wait for the LORD.
For with the LORD there is loving mercy,
in God is plentiful redemption.
It is the Lord who will redeem Israel
from all its iniquities.

Glory to the Father…

Ant. To persevere in so meritorious an apostolate, one must hold fast to the spirit of one’s vocation with fidelity and fervour.

Canticle (Phil 2:6-11)

Ant. There will always be kept in reserve a crucifix which will be hung in some visible place. (1825 letter to Fr. Courtes)

Though he was in the form of God,
Jesus did not count equality with God
something to be grasped at.

But emptied himself
taking the form of a slave,
being born in human likeness.

Being found in human estate,
he humbled himself and became obedient,
obediently accepting death,
even death on a cross!

Therefore God has highly exalted him
and bestowed on him the name
above every other name.

So that at the name of Jesus
every knee should bow,
in heaven, on the earth,
and under the earth,
and every tongue proclaim
to the glory of God:
Jesus Christ is Lord!

Glory to the Father…

Ant. There will always be kept in reserve a crucifix which will be hung in some visible place.

Reading

Moreover, we have the prophetic word, which is even more certain. Depend on it for your own good as a light shining in the dark, until first light breaks and the morning star rises in your hearts. At the same time, you need to know that no prophecy of scripture ever occurred by one’s own interpretation. Prophecy never comes through an act of human will, but comes as people have spoken for God under the power of the Holy Spirit.

(2 Peter 1:19-21)

Responsory

We will let our lives be enriched by the poor and the marginalized as we work with them

-We will let our lives be enriched by the poor and the marginalized as we work with them

for they can make us hear in new ways the Gospel we proclaim

-the poor and the marginalized

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit

-We will let our lives be enriched by the poor and the marginalized as we work with them

Canticle of Mary

Ant. Formation is a process which aims at the integral growth of a person and lasts a lifetime. (Constitution 47)

My heart is radiant, overflowing with joy,
for you have loved my lowliness.
You have shown me great favour;
all people will call me blest.

Your mercy extends throughout the ages
toward those who revere your holy name.
You have revealed your strength,
scattering the proud of heart.

You dethrone the powerful
and lift up the lowly.
The famished are filled;
the rich sent empty away.

Your people Israel you have remembered,
true to your loving kindness,
just as you have promised long ago
to Sarah and Abraham.

Glory to the Father…

Ant. Formation is a process which aims at the integral growth of a person and lasts a lifetime.

Intercessions

God of peace, send your spirit on the leaders of the world, turn their eyes toward the poor and suffering.

Protect and defend those who are discriminated against because of race, colour, class, sexual orientation, language or religion, that they may be accorded the rights and dignity which are theirs.

May all who died in your love share in your happiness, with Mary, our mother, and all your holy ones.

Lord’s Prayer

Concluding Prayer

Heavenly Father, you have called us to be the salt of the earth and the light of the world. Give us vigorous faith and a love that is genuine, so that all may see our works and give you the glory. We make our prayer through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God for ever and ever. Amen.
