Week 3: Tuesday Evening Prayer

Psalmody

Psalm 125

Ant. The motto is: Let’s do some good while we have the time. (1828 letter to Bishop P. B. de Chaffroy)

Those who put their trust in the LORD
are like Mount Zion, that cannot be shaken,
that stands forever.
Jerusalem! The mountains surround her;
so the LORD surrounds his people,
both now and forever.

For the sceptre of the wicked shall not rest
over the land of the righteous,
for fear that the hands of the righteous
should turn to evil.

Do good, LORD, to those who are good,
to the upright of heart;
but those who turn to crooked ways
the LORD will drive away with the wicked!
On Israel, peace!

Glory to the Father…

Ant. The motto is: Let’s do some good while we have the time.

Psalm 131

Ant. Why so discouraged dear friend, why the complaints? Pray, do not be discouraged. (1819 letter to Fr. Tempier)

O LORD, my heart is not proud,
nor haughty my eyes.
I have not gone after things too great,
nor marvels beyond me.

Truly, I have set my soul
in tranquillity and silence.
As a weaned child on its mother,
as a weaned child is my soul within me.

O Israel, hope in the LORD,
both now and forever.

Glory to the Father…

Ant. Why so discouraged dear friend, why the complaints? Pray, do not be discouraged.

Canticle (Rev 4:11; 5:9,10, 12)

Ant. You call us to serve all people, O God.

Worthy are you, O God, our God,
to receive glory and honour and power.

For you have created all things;
by your will they came to be and were made.

Worthy are you to take the scroll
and open its seals,
For you were slain, and by your blood,
you purchased for God
saints of every race and tongue,
of every people and nation.

You have made of them a kingdom,
and priests to serve our God,
and they shall reign on the earth.

Worthy is the Lamb who was slain
to receive power and riches,
wisdom and strength,
honour and glory and praise.

Glory to the Father…

Ant. You call us to serve all people, O God.

Reading

Your love must be sincere. Hate what is evil and cling to what is good. Love one another with the affection of sisters and brothers. Try to outdo one another in showing respect. Don’t grow slack, but be fervent in spirit: the One you serve is Christ. Rejoice in hope; be patient under trial; persevere in prayer.

(Romans 12:9-12)

Responsory

We will let our lives be enriched by the poor and the marginalized as we work with them

-We will let our lives be enriched by the poor and the marginalized as we work with them

for they can make us hear in new ways the Gospel we proclaim

-the poor and the marginalized

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit

-We will let our lives be enriched by the poor and the marginalized as we work with them

Canticle of Mary

Ant. Make us humble of heart and joyful to serve others.

My heart is radiant, overflowing with joy,
for you have loved my lowliness.
You have shown me great favour;
all people will call me blest.

Your mercy extends throughout the ages
toward those who revere your holy name.
You have revealed your strength,
scattering the proud of heart.

You dethrone the powerful
and lift up the lowly.
The famished are filled;
the rich sent empty away.

Your people Israel you have remembered,
true to your loving kindness,
just as you have promised long ago
to Sarah and Abraham.

Glory to the Father…

Ant. Make us humble of heart and joyful to serve others.

Intercessions

For all who are called to the consecrated life, that they will respond generously in offering their lives to help build the Reign of God. We pray

For church, that we may renew our commitment to Jesus’ mission to bring glad tidings to the poor, proclaim liberty to captives and recovery of sight to the blind, and to let the oppressed go free. We pray

For orphaned children throughout the world, and especially those who are abused or neglected, that we might work to save and serve them. We pray

Lord’s Prayer

Concluding Prayer

Compassionate God, we pause to rest in your presence. May the work we have done this day find fulfilment in you for our good and the good of all people of this earth. We ask this in the name of Jesus who is our way, our truth, and our life. Amen.
