Week 3: Sunday Evening Prayer I

Psalmody

Psalm 113

Ant. There is much good to be done [here]; use all your zeal and all your strength to arrive at good results. (1853 letter to Fr. Baudrand)

Praise, O servants of the LORD,
praise the name of the LORD!
May the name of the LORD be blest
both now and forevermore!
From the rising of the sun to its setting,
praised be the name of the LORD!

High above all nations is the LORD,
above the heavens God’s glory.
Who is like the LORD, our God,
who dwells on high,
who stoops from the heights to look down
upon heaven and earth?

From the dust the Lord lifts up the lowly,
from the ash heap raises the poor,
to set them in the company of leaders,
yes, with the leaders of the people.
To the childless wife God gives a home
as a joyful mother of children.

Glory to the Father…

Ant. There is much good to be done [here]; use all your zeal and all your strength to arrive at good results.

Psalm 116 (10-19)

Ant. I recommend myself to your good prayers which will be pleasing to God, for they come from a friend’s heart. (1861 letter to Archbishop Donnet)

I trusted, even when I said,
“I am sorely afflicted,”
and when I said in my alarm,
“All people are untruthful.”

How can I repay the LORD
for all the goodness shown to me?
The cup of salvation I will raise;
I will call on the name of the LORD.

My vows to the LORD I will fulfil
before all the people.
How precious in the eyes of the LORD
is the death of God’s faithful.

Your servant, LORD, your servant am I,
you have loosened my bonds.
I will offer you a thanksgiving sacrifice;
I will call on the name of the LORD.

My vows to the LORD I will fulfill
before all the people,
in the courts of the house of the LORD,
in your midst, O Jerusalem.

Glory to the Father…

Ant. I recommend myself to your good prayers which will be pleasing to God, for they come from a friend’s heart.

Canticle (Phil 2:6-11)

Ant. My dear friend, read this letter at the foot of your crucifix with a mind to heed only God. You are necessary for the work which the Lord inspires us to undertake. (1815 letter to Fr. Tempier)

Though he was in the form of God,
Jesus did not count equality with God
something to be grasped at.

But emptied himself
taking the form of a slave,
being born in human likeness.

Being found in human estate,
he humbled himself and became obedient,
obediently accepting death,
even death on a cross!

Therefore God has highly exalted him
and bestowed on him the name
above every other name.

So that at the name of Jesus
every knee should bow,
in heaven, on the earth,
and under the earth,
and every tongue proclaim
to the glory of God:
Jesus Christ is Lord!

Glory to the Father…

Ant. My dear friend, read this letter at the foot of your crucifix with a mind to heed only God. You are necessary for the work which the Lord inspires us to undertake.

Reading

Then Peter stood up with the Eleven and addressed the crowd: “Women and men of Judea, and all you who live in Jerusalem! Listen to what I have to say! These people are not drunk as you think – it’s only nine o’clock in the morning! No, it’s what Joel the prophet spoke of: ‘In the days to come – it is our God who speaks – I will pour out my Spirit on all humankind. Your daughters and sons will prophesy, your young people will see visions, and your elders will dream dreams. Even on the most insignificant of my people, both women and men, I will pour out my Spirit in those days, and they will prophesy. And I will display wonders in the heavens above and signs on the earth below: blood, fire and billowing smoke. The sun will be turned into darkness and the moon will become blood before the coming of the great and sublime day of our God. And all who call upon the name of our God will be saved.’

(Acts 2:14-21)

Canticle of Mary

Ant. In Mary, we recognize the model of the Church’s faith and of our own (Constitution 10)

My heart is radiant, overflowing with joy,
for you have loved my lowliness.
You have shown me great favour;
all people will call me blest.

Your mercy extends throughout the ages
toward those who revere your holy name.
You have revealed your strength,
scattering the proud of heart.

You dethrone the powerful
and lift up the lowly.
The famished are filled;
the rich sent empty away.

Your people Israel you have remembered,
true to your loving kindness,
just as you have promised long ago
to Sarah and Abraham.

Glory to the Father…

Ant. In Mary, we recognize the model of the Church’s faith and of our own.

Intercessions

Lord, we recognize that all the favours we have received today come through your generosity, do not let them return to you empty, but let them bear fruit.

Light and salvation of all nations, protect the men and women working in mission fields, enkindle in them the fire of your spirit.

May the faithful departed be numbered among the saints, whose names are in the book of life.

Lord’s Prayer

Concluding Prayer

Jesus, you heal the sick and broken-hearted. Let your mercy be upon us so that we may be a sign of your mercy in our world. We thank you for your forgiveness and for bringing us to this time of our lives. May all those who died find rest in you. Grant this through the intercession of all who died forgiving those who oppressed them. Amen.
