Week 2: Wednesday Evening Prayer

Psalmody

Psalm 62

Ant. The good Lord awakens our faith and our trust in his Divine Providence. (1838 letter to Fr. Courtès)

In God alone is my soul at rest,
my salvation comes from the Lord.
God alone is my rock, my salvation,
my fortress; I shall not greatly falter.

How long will you attack one alone,
break down your victim,
as you would a tottering wall,
or a tumbling fence?

Their plan is only to bring down someone of prominence;
they take pleasure in lies.
With their mouth they utter blessing,
but in their heart they curse.

Be at rest, my soul, in God alone,
from whom comes my hope.
God alone is my rock, my salvation,
my fortress; I shall not falter.

In God is my salvation and my glory,
my rock of strength;
in God is my refuge.
Trust at all times, O people;
pour out your hearts to God, our refuge.

The children of Adam are a breath,
an illusion, people of rank.
Placed on the scales, they rise;
they all weigh less than a breath.

Do not put your trust in oppression,
nor vain hopes on plunder.
Even if riches increase,
set not your heart on them.

For God has said only one thing;
only two have I heard:
that to God alone belongs power,
and to you, Lord, faithful love;
and that you repay each of us
according to our deeds.

Glory to the Father…

Ant. The good Lord awakens our faith and our trust in his Divine Providence.

Psalm 67

Ant. You have put to the test your strength and by Divine Grace you have reaped abundant blessings. (1843 letter to Fr. Dandurand)

May God be gracious and bless us.
Let your face shed its light upon us.
So will your ways be known upon earth
and all nations learn your salvation.

Let the peoples praise you, O God;
let all the peoples praise you.

Let the nations be glad and shout for joy,
with uprightness you rule the peoples;
you guide the nations on earth.

Let the peoples praise you, O God;
let all the peoples praise you.

The earth has yielded its fruit
for God, our God, has blessed us.
May God still give us his blessing,
and be revered to all the ends of the earth.

Glory to the Father…

Ant. You have put to the test your strength and by Divine Grace you have reaped abundant blessings.

Canticle (Col 1:12-20)

Ant. God will communicate to us the light of his spirit if we invoke him with confidence. (1830 letter to Fr. Tempier)

Let us give thanks to God
for having made us worthy
to share in the inheritance of the saints in light.

God has delivered us
from the power of darkness
and transferred us
into the kingdom of God’s beloved Son, Jesus,
in whom we have redemption,
the forgiveness of our sins.

Jesus is the image of the invisible God,
the firstborn of all creation;
in him all things were created,
in heaven and on earth,
things invisible and visible.

All things were created through him;
all were created for him.
He is before all else that is.
In him all things hold together.

He is the head of the body, the church!
He is the beginning,
the firstborn from the dead,
that in everything, he might be above all others.

In him the fullness of God was pleased to dwell,
and through him, to reconcile all things to himself,
whether on earth or in heaven,
making peace by the blood of his cross.

Glory to the Father…

Ant. God will communicate to us the light of his spirit if we invoke him with confidence.

Reading

Our pilgrim journey and Oblate identity as missionaries to the many faces of the poor call us to live as consecrated men through our vows of chastity, poverty, obedience, and perseverance, “making visible the marvels wrought by God in the frail humanity of those who are called.” (Vita Consecrata 20)

(Acts of the 37th General Chapter)

Responsory

We shall always look on Mary as our mother

-We shall always look on Mary as our mother

in the joys and sorrows of our missionary life

-as our mother

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit

-We shall always look on Mary as our mother

Canticle of Mary

Ant. You fill us with your love and your mercy lasts forever.

My heart is radiant, overflowing with joy,
for you have loved my lowliness.
You have shown me great favour;
all people will call me blest.

Your mercy extends throughout the ages
toward those who revere your holy name.
You have revealed your strength,
scattering the proud of heart.

You dethrone the powerful
and lift up the lowly.
The famished are filled;
the rich sent empty away.

Your people Israel you have remembered,
true to your loving kindness,
just as you have promised long ago
to Sarah and Abraham.

Glory to the Father…

Ant. You fill us with your love and your mercy lasts forever.

Intercessions

That the hungry and homeless may find in the hearts of Christians a faith that shows itself in practical care and concern for their needs. We pray.

For the elderly, the lonely and the sick or our communities, may they find peace and healing.

Show the faithful departed the vision of your face, let them rejoice in the contemplation of your presence.

Lord’s Prayer

Concluding Prayer

O God, we trust in your power to create, to sustain, to enable. But we could not trust if we did not know that you are always near. Be with us, Lord, as we are gathered here. Help us not to check our minds or our hearts at the door, but enable us to bring all that we are to you, so that we might experience your touch upon all aspects of our life. We pray this in the name of Jesus Christ. Amen.
