Week 2: Friday Evening Prayer

Psalmody

Psalm 116 (1-9)

Ant. My faith in the power of prayers leaves me some hope still. (1838 letter to Fr. Casimir Aubert)

I love the LORD who has heard
my voice, my appeal;
For God has turned an ear to me
whenever I call.

They surrounded me, the snares of death;
the anguish of Sheol has found me;
anguish and sorrow I found.
I called on the name of the LORD:
“Deliver my soul, O LORD!”

How gracious is the LORD, and righteous;
our God has compassion.
The LORD protects the simple;
I was brought low, and was saved.

Turn back, my soul, to your rest,
for the LORD has been good to you,
God has kept my soul from death,
my eyes from tears, and my feet from stumbling.
I will walk in the presence of the LORD
in the land of the living.

Glory to the Father…

Ant. My faith in the power of prayers leaves me some hope still.

Psalm 121

Ant. Be extremely prudent while traveling; pray to God. (1819 letter to Fr. Tempier)

I lift up my eyes to the mountains;
from where shall come my help?
My help shall come from the LORD,
who made heaven and earth.

The Lord will keep your foot from stumbling.
Your guard will never slumber.
No, the guardian of Israel
neither sleeps nor slumbers.

The LORD your guard, the LORD your shade
at your right hand.
By day the sun shall not smite you,
nor the moon in the night.

The LORD will guard you from evil,
will guard your soul.
The LORD will guard your going and coming,
both now and forever.

Glory to the Father…

Ant. Be extremely prudent while traveling; pray to God.

Canticle (Rev 15:3-4)

Ant. Let Divine Providence do its work. Think of nothing other than doing your duty, whatever your position and circumstances. (1850 letter to Etienne Semeria)

Great and wonderful are your works,
God the Almighty One!
Just and true are your ways,
Ruler of all ages!

Who shall refuse you honour,
or the glory due your name?

For you alone are holy,
all nations shall come and worship in your presence.
Your judgements are clearly seen.

Glory to the Father…

Ant. Let Divine Providence do its work. Think of nothing other than doing your duty, whatever your position and circumstances. (1850 letter to Etienne Semeria)

Reading

The urgent call to care for the earth, launched by Pope Francis, especially concerns us in our missionary work. We have been made aware of our inadequate efforts for the care of the environment. We are thus challenged  to commit ourselves more fully to prioritize ecological conversion as a fundamental part of our lives and an integral part of our evangelization.

(Acts of the 37th General Chapter)

Responsory

We shall always look on Mary as our mother

-We shall always look on Mary as our mother

in the joys and sorrows of our missionary life

-as our mother

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit

-We shall always look on Mary as our mother

Canticle of Mary

Ant. God lifts us up and our hearts overflow with joy.

My heart is radiant, overflowing with joy,
for you have loved my lowliness.
You have shown me great favour;
all people will call me blest.

Your mercy extends throughout the ages
toward those who revere your holy name.
You have revealed your strength,
scattering the proud of heart.

You dethrone the powerful
and lift up the lowly.
The famished are filled;
the rich sent empty away.

Your people Israel you have remembered,
true to your loving kindness,
just as you have promised long ago
to Sarah and Abraham.

Glory to the Father…

Ant. God lifts us up and our hearts overflow with joy.

Intercessions

Jesus, you came into the world to testify to the truth; make us credible witnesses to the truth of your Gospel.

Jesus you did not call your disciples servants but friends; help us to establish your reign by mutual collaboration and loving respect.

Jesus, you washed the feet of your followers; teach all civic and religious leaders how to govern with humility and reverence.

Lord’s Prayer

Concluding Prayer

Most loving God, we stand before you with our weaknesses and limitations. Use them that your power may be manifested, and bring us all to the knowledge of our need for each other in community that we may grow in love and understanding. We ask this through Jesus and the Holy Spirit. Amen.
