Week 1: Thursday Evening Prayer

Psalmody

Psalm 30

Ant. I place my hopes in God’s goodness in God who is so good.
(1831 letter to Fr. Tempier)

I will extol you, LORD, for you have raised me up,
and have not let my enemies rejoice over me.

O LORD my God, I cried to you for help,
and you have healed me.

O LORD, you have lifted up my soul from Sheol,
restored me to life from those who sink into the pit.

Sing psalms to the LORD, you faithful ones;
give thanks to God’s holy name.

Divine anger lasts a moment, but favour all through life.
At night come tears, but dawn brings joy.
I said to myself in my good fortune:
“I shall never be shaken.”

O LORD, your favour had set me like a mountain stronghold.
Then you hid your face, and I was put to confusion.

To you, O LORD, I cried,
to my Lord I appealed for mercy:
“What profit is my lifeblood, my going to the grave?
Can dust give you thanks, or proclaim your faithfulness?”

Hear, O LORD, and have mercy on me;
be my helper, O LORD.
You have changed my mourning into dancing,
removed my sackcloth and girded me with joy.

So let my soul sing psalms to you and not be silent.
O LORD my God, I will thank you forever.

Glory to the Father…

Ant. I place my hopes in God’s goodness in God who is so good.

Psalm 32

Ant. Humble yourself before God if you are at fault.
(1831 letter to Fr. Courtès)

Blessed is one whose transgression is forgiven,
whose sin is remitted.

Blessed the one to whom the LORD imputes no guilt,
in whose spirit is no guile.
I kept it secret and my frame was wasted.
I groaned all day long,

For your hand, by day and by night,
lay heavy upon me.
Indeed, my strength was dried up
as by the summer’s heat.

To you I have acknowledged my sin;
my guilt I did not hide.
I said, “I will confess my transgression to the LORD.”
And you have forgiven the guilt of my sin.

So let each faithful one pray to you
in the time of need.
The floods of water may reach high,
but such a one they shall not reach.

You are a hiding place for me;
you keep me safe from distress;
you surround me with cries of deliverance.

I will instruct you and teach you
the way you should go;
I will fix my eyes upon you.

Be not like horse and mule, unintelligent,
needing bridle and bit,
or else they will not approach you.

Many sorrows has the wicked,
but loving kindness surrounds the one who trusts in the LORD.

Rejoice in the LORD, exult you righteous!
Ring out your joy, all you upright of heart!

Glory to the Father…

Ant. Humble yourself before God if you are at fault.

Canticle (Rev 11:17-18, 12:10b-12a)

Ant. See everything in a good light… take care of each other. (1825 letter to Fr. Mye)

We praise you, God Almighty,
who is and who was.
You have assumed your great power,
you have begun your reign.

The nations have raged in anger,
but then came your day of wrath
and the moment to judge the dead;
the time to reward your servants the prophets
and the holy ones who revere you,
the great and small alike.

Now have salvation and power come,
your reign, O God, and the authority of your Anointed One.
For the accusers of our loved ones have been cast out,
who night and day accused them.

By the blood of the Lamb have they been defeated,
and by the testimony of your servants;
love for life did not deter them from death.
So rejoice, you heavens,
and you that dwell therein!

Glory to the Father…

Ant. See everything in a good light… take care of each other.

Reading

In inviting the Church to Synodality and fraternity, Pope Francis reminds us that communion is a challenge in our world so profoundly marked by divisions and selfishness. In his message to the capitulars, he said that Oblates will be pilgrims of hope only if they live in communion among themselves, in the Church, with all humanity, and the whole of creation.

(Acts of the 37th General Chapter)

Responsory

The Lord has given us food, bread of the finest wheat

  • The Lord has given us food, bread of the finest wheat

Honey from the rock, to our heart’s content

  • bread of the finest wheat

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit

  • The Lord has given us food, bread of the finest wheat

Canticle of Mary

Ant. Together, we create an atmosphere of freedom and mutual trust in which we call each other to an ever deeper commitment. (Constitution 48)

My heart is radiant, overflowing with joy,
for you have loved my lowliness.
You have shown me great favour;
all people will call me blest.

Your mercy extends throughout the ages
toward those who revere your holy name.
You have revealed your strength,
scattering the proud of heart.

You dethrone the powerful
and lift up the lowly.
The famished are filled;
the rich sent empty away.

Your people Israel you have remembered,
true to your loving kindness,
just as you have promised long ago
to Sarah and Abraham.

Glory to the Father…

Ant. Together, we create an atmosphere of freedom and mutual trust in which we call each other to an ever deeper commitment.

Intercessions

May we be a people of joy and hope, bringing peace, forgiveness and a sense of purpose to our restless world.

For the poor, the oppressed and those whose lives are crippled by fear. May we respond with compassion to their voices as they cry out for help.

For government leaders, that they may care for all of God’s creation, promote human rights and peace among peoples while attending to the needs of the poor and those who have no voice in society.

Lord’s Prayer

Concluding Prayer

Merciful God, whose compassion embraces all peoples, whose law is wisdom, freedom, and joy for the poor, fulfill in our midst your promise of favour, that we may receive the gospel of good news with faith and, anointed by the Spirit, freely proclaim it to the ends of the earth. Grant this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God for ever and ever. Amen.
