Week 1: Saturday Morning Prayer

Psalmody

Psalm 119 (145-152)

Ant. Seek some consolation from God in your condition at not being able to do all you would like. (1827 letter to Fr. Suzanne)

I call with all my heart; LORD, answer me.
I will observe your statutes.
I call upon you; save me,
and I will keep your decrees.

I rise before dawn and cry for help;
I have hoped in your word.
My eyes awaken before dawn,
to ponder your promise.

In your mercy, hear my voice, O LORD;
give me life by your decrees.
Those who pursue me with malice draw near;
they are far from your law.

But you, O LORD, are close;
all your commands are truth.
From of old I have known that your decrees
are established forever.

Glory to the Father…

Ant. Seek some consolation from God in your condition at not being able to do all you would like.

Canticle (Exod 15:1-4a, 8-13, 17-18)

Ant. Let us learn to appreciate the part the Lord has allotted to us. We have to count only on God. (1841 letter to Fr. Courtes)

I will sing to you, O God, for you are gloriously triumphant;
horse and rider you have cast into the sea.

You are my strength and my courage,
you are my salvation.
You are my God, I praise you;
God of my ancestors, I extol you.

Pharaoh’s chariots and army you cast into the sea.
At a breath of your anger the waters piled up,
the floods stood up in a heap;
the floods congealed in the midst of the sea.

The enemy boasted, ‘I will pursue and overtake them;
I will divide the spoils and have my fill of them;
I will draw my sword; my hand shall destroy them!’
When your wind blew, the sea covered them;
they sank as lead in the mighty waters.

Who is like you, among the gods?
Who is like you, majestic in holiness,
terrible in the glorious deeds, worker of wonders?
You stretched out your hand, the earth swallowed them!

In your love you led the people you redeemed;
you guided them to your holy dwelling.

You bring them in and plant them on your mountain,
the place you have made for your abode,
the sanctuary which your hands have established.
You, O God, will reign forever and ever.

Glory to the Father…

Ant. Let us learn to appreciate the part the Lord has allotted to us. We have to count only on God.

Psalm 117

Ant. I shall always rejoice over all the good you accomplish and all the blessings that come to you. (1821 letter to Fr. Rauzan)

O praise the LORD, all you nations;
acclaim God, all you peoples!

For God’s faithful love toward us is great;
the LORD remains faithful forever.

Alleluia!

Glory to the Father…

Ant. I shall always rejoice over all the good you accomplish and all the blessings that come to you.

Reading

Without Palermo and Aix, Venice could have produced one of those highly upright men, impassioned for great causes, very sure of themselves and inflexible towards the weaknesses of others. It is not from such material that God fashions his apostles. He allowed the fall of the proud “Count” in order to make the humble missionary to the poor. It is by experiencing our weaknesses that we discover and better understand those of others; not to condemn them, but to lovingly try to liberate them from the same, and lead them to Christ.

(Leflon Vol. 1 p. 260)

Canticle of Zachariah

Ant. The cross of Jesus Christ is central to our mission. (Constitution 4)

O God, you have come and freed your people;
from David’s house you have sent a Saviour.
Through ages the prophets have told us
that we would be saved from hatred.

You have shown to us your great mercy
by the promise to Sarah and Abraham
that we should be freed from all fear
to serve you in justice and holiness.

And you, John, are called prophet of God,
for you will prepare the way
to lead people to salvation
through the awareness and knowledge of God.

Praise to you, God of Israel.
The bright dawn will break upon us.
You give light to those in darkness.
You guide us to ways of peace.

Glory to the Father…

Ant. The cross of Jesus Christ is central to our mission.

Intercessions

For our community, may we recognize, affirm and rejoice in the goodness of one another.

For all who hunger for food and for meaning in life, that their needs will not go unnoticed by those who gather in Jesus’ name.

For our Oblate Family, that we constantly renew ourselves in Jesus Christ.

Lord’s Prayer

Concluding Prayer

O God, whose word burns like a fire within us, grant us a bold and faithful spirit, that in your strength we may be unafraid to speak your word and follow where you lead. We make our prayer through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God for ever and ever.  Amen.
